About
What is SCORM (and why should you care)?
A friendly guide for HR managers, safety coordinators, training directors, and instructional designers — without the technical jargon.
SCORM made simple
OpenSCORM is the open-source alternative to SCORM Cloud
Affordable, easy to use, AGPL v3 licensed. If you already know SCORM, skip ahead and get started. If not, keep reading.
SCORM is the universal language of training content
SCORM stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model. Long name, simple idea: a set of rules that ensures your online training works with any Learning Management System, no matter who created either one.
It eliminates compatibility headaches
So you can focus on what matters — creating engaging learning experiences for your team — instead of debugging integrations.
SCORM is like USB-C for e-learning
Remember the bad old days of phone chargers?
Apple had one connector. Android had another. Nothing worked together. Frustrating, expensive, and inefficient.
Imagine if every training course worked with only one specific LMS
You'd need different systems for different vendors. Switching LMS providers would mean losing all your content. That's the problem SCORM solves.
One standard that works everywhere
When your training content is SCORM-compliant, it works in any SCORM-compliant LMS. Like a USB-C cable that works with any USB-C device.
Why SCORM is a game-changer
Freedom of choice
You're not locked into one vendor's ecosystem. Pick the LMS that fits your needs, knowing your existing content will work.
Cost savings
No need to rebuild training when switching systems. Your investment in content is protected.
Easy vendor management
Buy training from multiple suppliers without worrying about compatibility. Everything just works.
Future-proofing
As your training needs evolve, SCORM keeps your content library valuable and usable.
SCORM versions: what you need to know
SCORM 1.2
The reliable workhorse that's been around forever. Most training content uses this version, and virtually every LMS supports it.
SCORM 2004
A more advanced version with enhanced tracking. Use it when you need complex sequencing or detailed interaction reporting.
Our recommendation: If you're buying content, ask vendors what versions they provide. If you're creating content, SCORM 1.2 is likely all you need. Upgrade to 2004 only when you specifically need its extra capabilities.
Who creates SCORM standards?
SCORM is an open standard developed and maintained by ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning), the committee that keeps everything compatible and up to date.
Specifications are free to view and download from the ADL website. Bring your propeller hat.
